Al Carstens had an outstanding career in Maine Township as a physical education teacher and coach, spending six years at Maine Township High School and 28 years at Maine West. Al coached football for 34, two of those seasons as head coach. He was head varsity baseball coach for 31 seasons. Al's Maine Township teams won back-to-back titles in 1958 and 1959. His Maine West team won the State title in 1963. Al is one of the only three Illinois coaches to win three State titles and the only Illinois coach to ever win back-to-back titles. Al's teams won 417 games, lost 184, and tied five. His teams won 14 Conference championships and ten Sectional titles. Al was selected as Illinois Baseball Coach of the Year in 1975 and as National Baseball Coach of the Year in 1976. He was inducted into the Illinois Baseball Coaches' Hall of Fame in 1979. Al's induction into the Maine West Coaches' Hall of Fame is most deserved.
