When Maine West opened its doors in 1959, Coach Eugene Zuccarini was there on the football field and on the basketball hardwood. Not until his retirement in 1985 did the Coach cease to be involved in Warrior athletics. In a career that spanned from Presidents Eisenhower to Reagan, Coach "Zucc" worked nearly 40 seasons as an assistant or head coach at Maine West. Coach Zuccarini worked with Warrior football, boys' and girls' basketball, and golf. As an assistant football coach under Ken Olson and Al Carstens, Zucc helped the Warriors win three Conference titles - 1959, 1963 and 1966. Under Gaston Freeman and the basketball program, Zucc served as the Assistant Varsity Coach and Sophomore Coach, winning a mulititude of Conference championships. During the 1980-81 basketball campaign, Head Coach Zuccarini led the Lady Warriors to their first Conference title. Coach Zuccarini's talents also led him to help students in the golf program. From 1959 to 1985, Zuccarini served either as the Assistant or Head Golf Coach. As an athlete, Eugene Zuccarini is enshrined in the Ottawa Township High School Hall of Fame and the Western Illinois University Hall of Fame for his skills in both football and basketball. Through a career that spanned four decades, 40 seasons and four Conference championships at the varsity level, Eugene Zuccarini is hereby nominated to the Maine West Coaches' Hall of Fame.
