Badminton, Volleyball, Golf
Royleen Tipton served Maine Township in a variety of capacities for over 33 years. During 28 of those years, she coached a variety of sports and served in a number of important local and State capacities. She coached badminton form 1969 to 1988, a period during which Maine West enjoyed a 2nd-place State finish in addition to a number of individual State qualifiers. Royleen coached the girls' volleyball team form its first 20 seasons, during which we had several Conference championships and took a 3rd-place State finish in 1983. She began the boys' volleyball program and served as Head Coach for six years, each of which had a winning season. In 2000, she was the first coach of the Maine Township girls' golf team, during which one of her players placed 12th in the State. She chaired the Illinois High School Association Advisory Board for Volleyball for 28 years. She has been inducted into the Illinois State University Athletic Hall of Fame and the Illinois Girls' Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Coach Tipton was there and actively involved in the very beginning of organized girls' interscholastic sports. She remembers when activities for girls were confined to Girls' Athletic Association play days and there were virtually no opportunities for girls in the interscholastic sport program. It was because of leadership provided by such pioneers as Coach Tipton that today we have the comprehensive program for girls and boys.
We are proud to present Royleen Tipton for induction into the Maine West Coaches Hall of Fame.
